German
Wood Carvings
In
the Erzgebirge region of Germany, a centuries-old tradition
lives on. Wood carvings, toys and Christmas items in a folk
art style developed during the 1700s are still being produced
today. In this region, where traditions have been passed down
for generations, there is a wide array of unique collectibles
available. Fortunately, with the Internet, you no longer have
to travel all the way to the Ore Mountains to collect these
items.
Many
of these items are hand-carved or turned on a lathe. Originally,
they were created by miners who turned to wood carving during
the winter months. Over the years, as the mines were emptied,
they turned to wood carving full time.
At
the WeatherVane, we carry an assortment of German wood carvings,
many with a Christmas or winter theme. These include wooden
angels, music boxes, and figurines that depict winter scenes
as well as spring, summer, and fall themes as well. Our collection
comprises hundreds of different pieces and we can order more
if there is something specific you are looking for.
Our
online catalog is just a sample of what you will find from the
skilled craftspeople of the Ore Mountains region. Collectors
from around the world actively seek these pieces to add to their
collections. Whether you choose them for their beauty, collectible
value, or decorative qualities, we are sure you will find delightful
gifts for everyone on your gift-giving list. Please contact
