Wooden Angels

In order to appreciate the Christmas art of Seiffen, Germany, it helps to understand the region's heritage. Miners, hundreds of years ago, depended on artificial light for their underground work, and they longed for the sun. Living in darkness, it is no wonder that their folk art usually contains a theme of light. This is most obvious in the exquisite wooden angels that are so popular with collectors.

In the Erzgebirge, carpenters often turned to wood carving during the winter in order to provide for their families. Thus, the wooden folk art we now treasure was born. Today, craftspeople continue the tradition of carving angels and other figurines out of wood. Fortunately, you don't have to travel to Germany to collect these figurines. You can purchase them over the Internet right here at the WeatherVane.

We offer a variety of German collectibles, including nutcrackers, music boxes, and the prized collection of wooden angels by Wendt and Kuhn. There are about 60 angel musicians in the collection as well as about 50 other wooden angels. You may recognize them by their distinct green wings, with eleven white dots on each wing.

You can also find wooden angels on other products that we carry. For example, in many of our Christmas-themed collectibles, angels play a large role. You will find them on Christmas pyramids and music boxes as well as in stand-alone figures. Shop weather-vane.com for all of your German collectibles. If there is something you are interested in that you do not see, please contact us to let us know and we may be able to import it for you.
